Thirteen Dynasties, Three Days

Few cities carry their history as openly as Xi’an. For more than a thousand years it was the capital of empire — the eastern terminus of the Silk Road, the seat of the Tang at its golden height — and that past is still standing: an intact city wall you can cycle, an underground army that guarded an emperor for two millennia, pagodas that have watched over the plain since the seventh century. Three days, a private guide, and the whole sweep of ancient China comes into focus.

Day 1: Within the Walls

The journey begins on the Ancient City Wall, the most complete in China — fourteen kilometers of ramparts best seen from the saddle of a bike. You descend to the Stele Forest, a quiet treasury of carved calligraphy, then wander Shuyuanmen culture street to the landmark Bell and Drum Towers. As evening falls, the lantern-lit lanes of the Muslim Quarter serve up the city’s most beloved street food — lamb skewers, roujiamo, and hand-pulled biangbiang noodles.

Day 2: The Emperor’s Army

The morning is given to the Terracotta Army, one of the greatest archaeological discoveries ever made: thousands of life-sized warriors, each with a different face, arrayed in vast pits to guard China’s first emperor into the afterlife. In the afternoon, the Huaqing Palace unfolds against Mount Li — imperial hot springs and the layered dramas of two thousand years — before a relaxed evening of Shaanxi specialties at Yongxingfang.

Day 3: The Glory of the Tang

The final day belongs to the Tang. You begin at the superb Shaanxi History Museum, then the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, built in the seventh century to house scriptures carried from India. As night falls, the city blazes back to life: the illuminated promenade of Datang Everbright City and the floodlit gardens of Tang Paradise recreate the splendor of the dynasty that ruled the world from here.

What’s Included

A private car with a dedicated English-speaking guide for all three days, every major entrance ticket and the advance reservations Xi’an now requires, two nights at a centrally located hotel, daily breakfast and two lunches, and all transfers. The timed tickets, the drive to Lintong, the queues — all handled, so the wonders land without friction.
