No Rush · Live in the Old Town
No drive exceeds an hour, and three nights in one old-town hotel — easy on grandparents and kids alike.
Where Mountains Meet the Sea — A Taste of Taizhou
Taizhou is more than “sticky-rice heaven” — it’s the hidden gourmet capital of the Yangtze Delta, the very place that lifted Taizhou cuisine onto the Michelin stage, from Bib Gourmand street stalls to the Black Pearl crown of Xin Rong Ji. Between the bites, walk the thousand-year-old Linhai city wall (the “Jiangnan Great Wall”) and feel the quiet of Guoqing Temple beneath its Sui-dynasty pagoda. Four easy days, no rush — sleep in, graze, and even grandparents and kids keep up without effort.
Day 1: First Bite, Straight to the Heart
Board a high-speed train at Shanghai Hongqiao and nap your way to Linhai. Hop off and head straight to Rongcun farmhouse — a Bib Gourmand pick — for an authentic countryside lunch framed by scenery. Afternoon means checking into your old-town hotel, brewing a cup of tea, and doing absolutely nothing. In the evening, stroll out to Jiangnan Rongzhuang, a dependable Rong-family kitchen with an elegant setting — the perfect first proper dinner.
Day 2: Old Walls & Local Flavor
Wake naturally and climb the Taizhou city wall, the “Jiangnan Great Wall”. Right below it lies East Lake, where a stroll feels like a miniature West Lake. Lunch at Rong Xiaoguan, Xin Rong Ji’s approachable line — order anything, nothing misses. The afternoon eases into Hupo Shijie, a beloved old-town coffee spot for resting your feet and snapping photos. By night, the lively Huipu Paidan (Bib Gourmand) delivers exactly the wok-hei, seafood-forward flavor that is Taizhou after dark.
Day 3: A Temple Morning, a Star-Studded Night
Drive an hour to Tiantai County and visit Guoqing Temple, ancestral seat of the Tiantai school of Buddhism. This Sui-dynasty monastery asks no admission — rice paddies, ancient trees and ochre walls, every frame a postcard. Return to the hotel to recharge for the evening’s centerpiece: a pilgrimage to Xin Rong Ji (Linhai HQ), the ceiling of Taizhou cuisine. Its golden crispy hairtail, home-braised yellow croaker and nian gao — order with your eyes closed.
Day 4: A Hidden Gem & a Starry Finale
After checkout, drive about an hour to the Huangyan Rock Grotto, a breathtaking quarry-carved stone cathedral that photographs like a dream — the trip’s secret surprise. Then straight to Lao Bian for the finale: a Michelin one-star at barely ¥200 a head, where the duck dumplings and signature pork ribs are absurdly good value. Well fed, head to Taizhou West Station for the high-speed train home, arriving at Shanghai Hongqiao by evening — just in time for dinner.
