The Real Shangri-La, in Three Days
The name was a novelist’s invention, but Yunnan’s highland answered it so completely that the town took it for its own. Up here, above 3,200 metres, the air is thin and clear, prayer flags snap in a cobalt sky, and golden monastery roofs catch the first and last light of the day. Three days is enough to stand before the great Tibetan monasteries, watch a sacred snow peak turn to gold at dawn, and walk a national park of mirror lakes and primeval forest — all with a private guide who knows when the mountain shows its face.
Day 1: Monasteries & the Old Town
The journey opens at Songzanlin Monastery, the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan, its gilded halls rising in tiers above a still lake — little wonder it is called the Little Potala Palace. The afternoon crosses the open grasslands of Napa Lake, where horses graze and black-necked cranes pass through, and pauses beneath the vast Great Prayer Flags streaming against the sky. As evening falls you arrive in Dukezong Ancient Town, its cobbled Tibetan lanes glowing with butter lamps, the world’s largest prayer wheel turning on the hill above.
Day 2: The Sacred Snow Mountain
An early start for Meili Snow Mountain and its sacred peak of Kawagarbo — when the first light sets the snowfield ablaze, it is one of the finest sunrises in all of Yunnan. From there you descend toward the Mingyong Glacier, among the lowest-lying glaciers on earth, its ice reaching down through the pines. The day continues along the dramatic Ninong Gorge above the Mekong, on the road toward the hidden village of Yubeng beneath the holy mountain — an optional trek for those who want to go deeper.
Day 3: National Park & Hidden Canyon
The morning belongs to Pudacuo National Park, the first national park in China — the mirror waters of Shudu Lake, alpine meadows, and forest untouched for centuries, all best taken slowly at this altitude. The afternoon turns to the deep canyon of Balagezong, beneath its own sacred snow peak, ending at the Shambhala Stupa Gorge — a quiet, fitting close to a journey through the land that gave Shangri-La its name.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will I feel the altitude in Shangri-La?
Shangri-La town sits at around 3,200m, and several sites are higher still. Most travelers adjust within a day. We keep the first day gentle, build in rest, and can arrange bottled oxygen — please tell us in advance if you have any health concerns.
Can we really see Meili Snow Mountain?
Kawagarbo is famously shy behind cloud, especially at midday. We plan a dawn viewing for the best odds and confirm timing with the season — but the mountain's mood is part of its magic.
Is this itinerary tiring?
It is full but well-paced with a private car between sites. Yubeng and some glacier trails involve real hiking; for a gentler rhythm we can swap in easier viewpoints or spread the highlights over four days.
Can the itinerary be customized?
Absolutely. Shika Snow Mountain's cable car, Tiger Leaping Gorge, or a longer stay at Yubeng can be added — just let us know in advance.
