Lijiang, Where the Snow Mountain Meets the Old Town

Some places ask to be hurried through; Lijiang asks you to slow down. Here, beneath the glaciers of a 5,596-metre sacred peak, a thousand years of Naxi life still flow through cobbled lanes and willow-lined canals. Three days are enough to stand among glaciers, gaze into water that mirrors the snow, and lose an evening to lantern light and the murmur of the streams — all with a private guide who turns each old town from a name on a map into a living story.

Day 1: The Old Town & Its Mirror

The journey opens at Black Dragon Pool, the most photographed scene in all of Yunnan, where the Deyue Pavilion floats on water so still it returns a flawless image of distant Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. The afternoon belongs to the Lijiang Old Town — the lively Zhongyi Market, the grand halls of Mufu Palace built by the Naxi chieftains, and the climb up Lion Hill to the Wangu Tower, where a sea of grey-tiled roofs spreads to the mountains. As dusk falls, the lanterns come on along Sifang Street and the canal-side bars of Wuyi and Qiyi streets.

Day 2: The Sacred Snow Mountain

The day most travelers remember: a drive into the highlands, past the Naxi cultural valley of Dongba, to ride the grand cable car up Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and stand among glaciers in the thin air of the Glacier Park. You descend to the unreal milky turquoise of Blue Moon Valley, its glacial pools terracing beneath the white peaks, then take the meadow chairlift to Yunshanping for a boardwalk through spruce forest, ending among the grazing yaks of Yak Meadow and Ganhaizi.

Day 3: The Soul of the Naxi

A slower, gentler day among the highland villages. The morning unfolds at the stone village of Yuhu beneath the snow mountain and the tranquil wetlands of Lashi Lake. Then to Baisha Old Town, the original Naxi capital and the most authentic of the ancient towns, home to the celebrated Ming-dynasty frescoes. The journey closes in Shuhe Old Town — the snow-peak reflection of Jiuding Dragon Pool, the 400-year Tea-Horse stone bridge, and the easy afternoon hum of its own Sifang Street.

What’s Included

A private car with a dedicated English-speaking guide for all three days, every major entrance ticket and the cable-car and shuttle reservations Jade Dragon Snow Mountain requires, two nights in a hand-picked Naxi courtyard or boutique hotel, daily breakfast and two lunches, and all transfers. Every logistical headache — the timed cable-car tickets, the highland distances, the queues — is handled so you can simply take Lijiang in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the altitude on Jade Dragon Snow Mountain a concern?

The Glacier Park reaches nearly 4,500 m, where some feel mild altitude effects. We pace the day carefully, carry oxygen, and an optional supplemental cylinder is available — most guests are comfortable throughout.

Do any sites need advance booking?

Yes — the grand cable car on Jade Dragon Snow Mountain sells out quickly and requires timed reservations. We secure all tickets and shuttles in advance so nothing is missed.

Is this itinerary tiring?

It is full but well-paced with a private car between sites. For older travelers or a gentler rhythm, the same highlights can be spread over four days or the optional Dongba Valley stop omitted.

Can the itinerary be customized?

Absolutely. A Lashi Lake horseback ride, Tiger Leaping Gorge day trip, or an Impression Lijiang performance can be added — just let us know in advance.
